![]() ![]() Since 1998, the world's largest Hanukkiah a 32-ft.-high, gold-colored steel structure can be found during the Festival of Lights in New York City's Central Park. Olive oil was traditionally used to light the Hannukiah, later replaced by candles that are inserted incrementally each night from right to left, but lit from left to right. According to strict Jewish law, a Hanukkiah should have eight candleholders of the same height and a ninth branch that is set higher than the rest. ![]() A Hanukkiah, however, has nine candlesticks one for each night of Hanukkah and an extra one to light the others. Of those, there are three: The first is a depiction or copy of the TEMPLE menorah, which existed within the Je. A menorah, which has only seven candleholders, was the lamp used in the ancient holy temple in Jerusalem now a symbol of Judaism and an emblem of Israel. The Chanukah menorah has 9 (8+1) because when the Jews were able to go back into their temple after having been oppressed and worse (again) the eternal flame in the temple only had one day of oil. 7 Branch Menorah Before Hanukkah Menorahs became a thing, there was only one single Menorah the ancient golden candelabra from the Jewish temple. Most people including Jews incorrectly refer to this as a menorah, when in fact the correct name for the candleholder is Hanukkiah or Hanukkah menorah. The menorah has 7 (6+1) because that is how it is described in the Torah. The seven-branched menorah was originally found in the wilderness sanctuary and then later in the Temple in Jerusalem and was a popular motif of religious art. Lighting a special, nine-branched candelabrum is the main ritual on Hanukkah. ![]()
